One in four women experience a pregnancy or infant loss at some point in their life. For others that number is higher. They have a deep impact and effect more than just the women who experience them for years to come. As those on the front line working face to face with families during the perinatal period it is important to be prepared to support families during this time of need. BABES offers perinatal bereavement distance learning opportunities for those seeking education on how to support current or future clients as well as providing self care during this time.
This course is designed to enhance knowledge of and confidence in perinatal bereavement care for birth professionals and support workers who are involved in the delivery of care to infants and their families.
Perinatal bereavement care is holistic, multi-disciplinary care for infants, women and families following antenatal or postnatal diagnosis of life-limiting conditions, providing integrated ongoing support through pregnancy, delivery, postnatal and where appropriate, continuing bereavement care. This may also sometimes be referred to as supportive or comfort care.
Occasions occur when a pregnant woman can be faced with a devastating diagnosis for her baby through screening and diagnostic tools during her pregnancy, the loss of pregnancy, stillbirth, or an unexpected birth outcome. During this course these concepts will be explored and you will have a better understanding of what bereavement care means at this time and help you to support the woman and her partner through decision making and making appropriate choices for their infant and the greater family whenever appropriate i.e. this may be during the antenatal period at the time of diagnosis, at the time of delivery or in the period after birth.

Why BABES is different
The BABES Perinatal Bereavement Program was designed with birth professionals in mind. It is taught by the author of Perinatal Bereavement for Birth Profeesionals. It is holistic, evidence-based, includes expert contributions, its client focused, and includes care for the birth worker. The course is designed to be in addition a core birth professional training. This includes doulas, midwives, and nurses. We believe all professionals working with families in the childbearing years should have bereavement training so the course is set up to be affordable and accessible.
